A new resource aims to help schools implement policies to prevent suicide among students. The Model School District Policy on Suicide Prevention outlines best practices for preventing and responding to suicide attempts. It also includes guidance for school staff on how to identify and assist those at risk, such as LGBTQ students. Sam Brinton, a spokesperson for The Trevor Project, encourages parents and students to find out whether their school district has a suicide prevention policy. “I do think it is important for people to realize they should ask their school district what their policy is and if they include prevention, intervention, and postvention.” The Model School Policy was developed by The Trevor Project and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, American School Counselor Association, and National Association of School Psychologists.
