According to Japanese authorities, suicides have decreased for the tenth year in a row. Falling by about 40 percent in the past 15 years, the number of suicides nationwide hit a 40-year low in 2019. Japan has implemented national efforts to reduce its suicide rate, which is higher than many other developed countries. Efforts include increasing access to mental health services and crisis hotlines. The government has also passed measures to address workplace mental health, such as limiting overtime hours and requiring employees in large companies to take an annual stress test.
