Australia’s National Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Intersex (LGBTI) Health Alliance has released a mental health and suicide prevention strategy. The document contains recommendations for improving mental health and preventing suicide among LBGTI populations across the country, with approaches to promotion, prevention, intervention, treatment, and maintenance. The strategic goals and actions laid out in the plan include improving access to care; establishing an evidence base on the health of LGBTI populations; recognizing and responding to diversity within the LGBTI community; improving social inclusivity and reducing discrimination; increasing the competence of mental health professionals to respond to LGBTI needs; and developing mental health and suicide prevention programs. In the document’s foreword, Health Alliance Executive Director Rebecca Reynold wrote, “This document aims to provide you with strategies for action that will ensure that targeted responses adequately and appropriately support the needs of LGBTI people and communities as a priority.”
