Program or Intervention Summary

Recognize, Respond, REACH is a comprehensive suicide education program designed to teach individuals what to recognize when suicide might be present, to respond appropriately with care and concern and actively reach for help for themselves or someone else. The program emphasizes the importance of having a safe, honest and meaningful conversation about suicide. Developing a further understanding of risk and protective factors associated with suicide, while encouraging help-seeking behaviors through relatable, age-appropriate language and strategies, the program is designed for those who might be thinking about suicide, those who’ve been affected by suicide and for those wanting to help prevent it.

Participants learn to identify what someone might do, feel, or say when suicide risk is present, and are introduced to coping strategies for navigating times that feel heavy, hard, or overwhelming. Knowing there are times when we need help outside of ourselves and that we may not have the words to express our need for help, the program includes a specialized REACH Card which allows for help-seeking behaviors for themself or someone else; the card includes concrete action steps and accessible resources for others to help. Recognize, Respond REACH also encourages defining and identifying adult safety connections for youth.

The program includes a vital parent/guardian/caregiver component, which provides information on: Recognizing signs of suicide risk, implementing lethal means safety practices, a guide for Safety Planning and encourages engagement in help-seeking services. nnBy integrating education with action, Recognize Respond REACH promotes early identification of suicide risk, allows for intervention, and provides for a connection between youth, parents/guardians/caregivers, and supportive services.
