Suicide and Drug Poisoning

Between 2014 and 2023, the rate of death by accidental poisoning more than doubled, from 13.1 to 30 per 100,000. During the same time, the rates of death by suicide, motor vehicles, and homicide each increased slightly (from 13 to 14.1 per 100,000, 11.3 to 13.4 per 100,000, and 5 to 7 per 100,000, respectively). In 2014, there were approximately equal death rates for suicide and accidental poisoning, but in 2023 the rate of death by accidental poisoning was more than twice that of death by suicide. The category of accidental poisoning includes accidental drug overdose deaths.

Among deaths by drug poisoning in 2023, 0.1 per 100,000 were suicide deaths that involved cocaine; 0.2 per 100,000 were suicide deaths that involved โ€œother synthetic narcoticsโ€ (a category that includes fentanyl); 0.2 per 100,000 were suicide deaths that involved โ€œpsychostimulants with abuse potentialโ€ (a category that includes methamphetamine); 0.3 per 100,000 were suicide deaths that involved opium, methadone, or other opioids; and 0.3 per 100,000 were suicide deaths that involved benzodiazepines (a category that includes Xanax). In 2023, suicide deaths involving heroin made up less than 0.1 per 100,000 deaths.
