Style guide: Reporting on mental health

This style guide notes ways in which newsrooms can present a more accurate picture of mental illness. It includes use of appropriate language, verifying information and making help resources available for readers who need them.

Recent research indicates that adverse childhood experiences such as caregiver mental health issues contribute to suicide risk.  Using a case study approach, this guide presents resources service providers, advocates, and practitioners can use to better understand and engage the community in responding to children whose caregivers are negatively impacted by mental illness, substance abuse, or trauma.  

Breaking the silence in the workplace: A guide for employers on responding to suicide in the workplace

This guide is designed for employers and helps organizations to increase their understanding and confidence in responding to suicide in the workplace. Through this understanding, employers can reduce or minimize impacts on workplace outcomes.  The guide explores what is involved in supporting employees bereaved through suicide and other practical information about responding effectively to suicide in the workplace. Sections examine four workplace suicide and offer practical approaches for each one and developing and implementing a bereavement policy to deal with suicide in the workplace.

Adolescent Suicide Prevention Program Manual: A Public Health Model for Native American Communities

This manual describes the Adolescent Suicide Prevention Program, why the program was developed, how it was created, and how it was maintained for 16 years (from 1989 to 2005). Based on the principles of community involvement and ownership, as well as culturally framed and public health approaches, the Adolescent Suicide Prevention Program emphasized community, school, outreach, and surveillance, as well as innovative behavioral health programs, ongoing program evaluation, and sustainability.

With more people using Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube, there has been an increase in the incidence of individuals at risk using these media to voice thoughts of suicide. This article discusses this emerging issue and offers basic guidelines on how social media users and host sites can respond.

Campus MHAP: A guide to campus mental health action planning

Developed by The Jed Foundation (TJF) and Education Development Center (EDC), CampusMHAP: A Guide to Campus Mental Health Action Planning is a 32-page publication of principles and recommendations that can help college and university professionals develop a comprehensive plan to promote mental health within their campus communities, support students who are struggling emotionally or are distressed, and prevent suicide. The publication is divided into three main sections: Building Momentum and Infrastructure, Engaging in a Strategic Planning Process, and Strategies for Promoting Mental Health and Preventing Suicide. CampusMHAP: A Guide to Campus Mental Health Action Planning is part of the CampusMHAP series, which includes four webinars (Building the Momentum, Identifying Priorities, Developing Programs, and Measuring Impact) in the Campus Mental Health Action Planning series (archived on the Jed Foundation website). 

Writing and production of CampusMHAP: A Guide to Campus Mental Health Action Planning  was a collaborative effort between The Jed Foundation (TJF) and Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC). College and university campus professionals working directly with programs and services related to mental health and suicide prevention contributed to the content.  

Program Objectives: 

Campus administrators and others who read CampusMHAP: A Guide to Campus Mental Health Action Planning will have greater:

  1. Understanding of the public health approach as it applies to mental health and suicide prevention on college campuses and as described in the Jed Foundation/SPRC Comprehensive Approach to Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Promotion.
  2. Knowledge of the infrastructure needed to build and sustain an effective mental health promotion and suicide prevention effort on campus.
  3. Knowledge of how a strategic planning process can help ensure an effective response to mental health and suicide prevention planning.
  4. Knowledge of specific strategies and resources for addressing college student mental health and suicide prevention.
