The Australian Institute for Suicide Research and Prevention at Griffith University is launching a nationwide study to learn more about the factors that can lead to suicide among lesbian, bisexual, gay, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) people. “We know that LGBTI people are at a higher risk for non-fatal suicidal behaviors, such as suicidal thoughts, self-harm, and suicide attempts. But to date, no studies have been published on LGBTI people who have died by suicide in Australia,” said Delaney Skerrett, a Research Fellow at Griffith University. Researchers will interview Australian adults about their observations and understanding of the period leading up to a loved one’s death by suicide. The goal of the study, funded by the Australian mental health advocacy organization beyondblue, is to inform the development of strategies to prevent suicide by LGBTI people in Australia.
