CALIFORNIA: LA County to Begin Tracking Suicide Rates, Violent Deaths in LGBTQ Community

Los Angeles County has passed a motion requiring coroners and medical examiners to track suicide and violent deaths among LGBTQ people. Currently, county death records do not include any sexual orientation or gender identity data. The new measure requires coroner staff to collect that information to help track the prevalence of violent deaths and hate crimes in the LGBTQ community. With this effort, county officials hope to better understand mortality risk in the LGBTQ community so that they can develop programs and policies to address it.
