Suicide by Age

Between 2019 and 2023, the highest rates of suicide death by age were consistently among adults 85 years and older and the lowest rates were consistently among young adults ages 15 to 24 and adults ages 65 to 74. While other age groups (25 to 34, 35 to 44, 45 to 54, 55 to 64, and 75 to 84) remained in the middle, in 2020 the rate for adults ages 25 to 34 increased and the rate for adults ages 45 to 64 decreased. The largest changes over time for these groups are decreases in rates among adults ages 55 to 64 and 45 to 54.

In 2023, suicide was the second leading cause of death for those ages 10 to 14, 15 to 24, and 25 to 34. Suicide was the fourth leading cause of death for those ages 35 to 44, the fifth leading cause of death for those ages 45 to 54, and the eighth leading cause of death for those ages 55 to 64. Although suicide has historically been among the top ten leading causes of death for all ages combined, this has not been the case since 2019. Since 2020, COVID-19 has been in the top four leading causes of death.
