Utah has banned conversion therapy for minors. Aimed at altering a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity, the practice is now illegal in 19 states. Utah’s ban applies to licensed clinicians effective immediately. However, the new law does not affect clergy, religious counselors, parents, or grandparents. Conversion therapy has been widely rejected by the medical community, including the American Psychiatric Association, American Psychological Association, and American Academy of Pediatrics. Research suggests LGBTQ youth who are subjected to conversion efforts are at increased risk for suicide attempts.
