UTAH: Better Program Data Needed to Improve Utah Suicide Prevention Efforts, Study Says
October 19, 2018
A recent report offered recommendations to strengthen Utah’s suicide prevention efforts. Prepared by the Utah Foundation, the report examined the state’s risk factors for suicide and current strategies for addressing them. It found that risk factors include opioid use, access to guns, living in a rural area, and non-Hispanic White and Native American ethnicity. The report advised the state to expand access to mental health care, increase financial support for those facing unemployment, and implement workplace prevention programs. To increase the likelihood that new and existing suicide prevention efforts are successful, the report also recommended that the state collect and evaluate data to find out what works.
