Using Awkward Silences for Potentially Life-Saving Conversation about Depression
March 30, 2018
A new campaign is encouraging teens and young adults to reach out to friends who are struggling. Developed by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) and Ad Council, “Seize the Awkward” offers young people tips for talking about mental health with their peers. The national ad campaign includes video segments that show how awkward silences can be opportunities to connect with friends who are having a hard time. “This campaign gives young people tools to recognize the risks and warning signs and shows them how to have a conversation—and most importantly how to be there for a friend who may be struggling,” said AFSP Vice President of Communications Stephanie Coggin. “With the help of this campaign, we are empowering teens to reach out and create a safe space for their friends to open up.”
