SOUTH KOREA: Govt., Ruling Party Work to Reduce Suicide, Traffic, Industrial Accident Deaths

South Korea aims to significantly reduce its number of suicide deaths by 2022. Government officials have announced new measures to identify and assist those at risk, promote mental health, and strengthen community-based supports. The measures seek to reduce the annual number of suicide deaths from 13,092 to less than 10,000, and the suicide rate from 25.6 to less than 20 per 100,000. “President Moon expressed hope that related government ministries and local governments will work together to implement the new government measures, and that the whole of society, including the religious, media, and business circles, will help spread a suicide prevention campaign to protect the lives of our people,” said a government spokesperson.
