A three-year program will provide mental health training to 5,000 Long Islanders. Funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the Mental Health First Aid program will train participants how to recognize and respond to people in crisis. Trainees will include school staff, faith leaders, emergency services personnel, primary care providers, and veterans and their families. “Just like CPR provides training to someone in cardiac arrest, this program will provide trainees the skills to identify and help people in different kinds of mental health distress,” said Michael Stoltz, chief executive officer of the Association for Mental Health and Wellness of Ronkonkoma.
