A program in New York City is working to prevent suicide among Latina girls. Founded in 2008, the Life is Precious program offers linguistically and culturally competent mental health resources to Latina youth. It also runs messaging campaigns to spread awareness about suicide in the Hispanic community. The program operates out of four locations across the city, in neighborhoods with a large Latino population. Founder Rosa Gil emphasizes the importance of meeting the linguistic and cultural needs of the community. “If we truly want to reach a population that has been marginalized, we must speak with them in a language they understand and provide services that incorporate their heritage,” she said.
