Most Inmates with Mental Illness Still Wait for Decent Care

Many inmates in the U.S. are not receiving the mental health care they need. National data suggest prison inmates have significantly higher rates of psychological disorders than the general population. Of those experiencing serious psychological distress, only about half are treated. According to experts, inmates who receive inadequate care are at risk for worse mental health outcomes and increased contact with the criminal justice system. Some prison systems are working to address these issues. For example, the Joliet Treatment Center in Illinois serves inmates with serious mental illness, providing them with individualized treatment plans and supports such as job training. Warden Andrea Tack said Joliet aids inmates in their recovery by giving them opportunities to connect with others and participate in a community.
