INTERNATIONAL: Rail Suicides: A Joint Nordic Approach to Reduce Numbers
February 28, 2020
The Nordic Council Welfare Committee has released a proposal for preventing suicide in the region. The proposal aims to reduce the suicide rate in Nordic countries 25 percent by 2025, specifically targeting vulnerable groups. It also sets the goal of reducing rail suicide to zero in that timeframe. Efforts currently underway to meet that goal include platform barriers in some of the region’s urban train stations. There are also platform screen doors installed throughout Copenhagen’s underground metro. Oslo and Stockholm have additional measures in place to prevent suicide on metro tracks, such as security guards and train drivers who are trained to spot people in distress.
