How Suicide Prevention Is Becoming Part of Anthony Bourdain’s Legacy

In the year since Anthony Bourdain’s suicide death, the restaurant industry has increased its prevention efforts. The celebrity chef drew attention to the industry’s high-pressure culture and its impact on mental health. His death highlighted the need to better support food service workers, according to Bryan Schroeder, executive director of the Giving Kitchen. The Atlanta nonprofit recently launched free online training in the Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) method of recognizing and responding to suicide risk. Since May, more than 400 food service workers across the country have signed up. Some industry members also took advantage of Bourdain’s June 25 birthday to kick off events and fundraising efforts promoting mental health.
