The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has adopted rules that require all wireless phone companies to implement georouting for calls to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (988 Lifeline). Georouting is the process of sending wireless calls to local 988 centers based on the caller’s approximate location instead of their phone’s area code. This approach can help ensure callers are connected to nearby resources and services when they need on-the-ground support. The FCC also proposed rules that would require covered text providers to provide georouting data for 988 text messages.
