CALIFORNIA: Nearly 9 in 10 California School Districts Have Adopted Policies Preventing Youth Suicide

Nearly 90 percent of California school districts have suicide prevention policies in place, according to a new report from The Trevor Project. Two years ago, the state passed a law requiring schools to establish suicide prevention programs for students in grades 7 to 12. The report surveyed school districts this year and found that 86 percent of middle and high schools have adopted suicide prevention policies since the law passed. It also found that school policies are meeting the law’s requirement to address the particular needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ) students. Some LGBTQ students in these districts have reported that they finally “felt seen” by their school administration.
