Construction on the Golden Gate Bridge suicide prevention net began last week, following a three-year delay. The stainless steel net will be installed 20 feet below the sidewalk and extend 20 feet from either side of the bridge, concealed from the road. Although the $200 million project was approved in 2014, it was delayed due to debate and its high cost. Net installation is planned to start in mid-2018 and be completed by 2021. In 2016, 39 suicide deaths took place at the bridge, and 200 were prevented.
