Hispanics and Latinos
Hispanics and Latinos have the lowest suicide rates among all racial/ethnic groups in the United States, although only slightly lower than blacks and African Americans (see Scope of the Problem). This is a diverse group, which includes immigrants from Mexico and other former Spanish colonies, as well as people from countries in Latin America, such as Brazil or Suriname, who have different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Suicide prevention programs should use a culturally competent approach that takes into account factors such as language, length of time in the United States, and attitudes towards mental health problems and help seeking.
