Blacks and African Americans
Although suicide rates are lower among Blacks and African Americans than among whites (see Scope of the Problem), suicide and other mental health problems are important issues affecting this population. Suicide prevention efforts should identify and address the risk and protective factors most relevant to each affected subgroup (e.g., African American young men). Programs should use a culturally competent approach and consider involving the most appropriate gatekeepers and settings.
