Cal Beyer
Cal Beyer is the vice president of workforce risk and worker wellbeing at CSDZ, a construction insurance and risk management company. CSDZ is a Holmes Murphy Company. He has worked to raise awareness of mental health, substance use disorders, and suicide prevention issues in the construction industry during his 30 years in the field. He is a member of the National Wellness Institute and has been awarded their Certified Wellness Practitioner credential.
Beyer was an inaugural appointee of the Workplace Task Force of the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention (Action Alliance) in 2010 and served as co-chair from 2015 to 2017. He was appointed to the Action Alliance Executive Committee in 2016, the year the Construction Subcommittee of the Workplace Task Force was awarded the Gary E. Bird Horizon Award for Innovation from the International Risk Management Institute. Beyer’s efforts in conjunction with Dr. Sally Spencer-Thomas led to the creation of the Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention, also in 2016.
Beyer speaks and publishes extensively on safety leadership, human capital risk management, and all dimensions of worker well-being. He is an active member of the Construction Financial Management Association. He was awarded the 2016 Danny Parish Outstanding Leadership Award and the 2017 Chairman’s Award for the Construction Financial Management Association. He was also named one of the “Top 25 Newsmakers” by Engineering News-Record for his work in suicide prevention. Currently, Beyer serves on the Expert Advisory Group of the Center for Workplace Mental Health of the American Psychiatric Association Foundation. He has helped launch construction industry suicide prevention stakeholder groups in Washington, Oregon, and Utah. His first workplace suicide prevention project was in the 1990s and involved suicides in jails and lockup facilities.
