MICHIGAN: Michigan Prison Agency Wants to Reduce Stress, Suicide among Corrections Officers

The Michigan Department of Corrections is taking steps to prevent suicide among its employees. In response to a series of suicides among current and former officers, the department recently hired an employee wellness manager. The new hire will manage the department’s peer support, chaplain, and traumatic incident stress management programs. Since 2018, the department has required corrections officers to take a stress management class and plans to add resilience training to its 2020 program. In addition to educating officers, the department also hopes to encourage them to talk more openly about stress and reach out for help when they are struggling.
