Collaborative Safety Planning for Older Adults

This manual, supported by a Clinical Educator Grant from the South Central MIRECC, is designed for use by nurses, social workers, physicians, and other professionals who may or may not have extensive training in psychotherapy. The manual’s goal is to improve the quality of safety plans for veterans with a focus on older veterans, typically 65 years or older; however, most information can be applied across veteran age groups.

The companion article, Safety Planning to Manage Suicide Risk with Older Adults: Case Examples and Recommendations, describes a collaborative, creative approach to safety planning that illustrates how to engage older adults and minimize barriers associated with the aging process.
