COLORADO: Colorado Is Leading the Country in Suicide Prevention Work
July 20, 2018
Colorado is using a comprehensive approach to reduce its suicide rates. The Colorado Office of Suicide Prevention helps fund diverse efforts across the state, including school-based programs, health care initiatives, and gun owner outreach. The state office works closely with other public health offices focused on substance abuse and child fatality, in an effort to improve the overall health of the population and prevent crises before they start. These state partnerships have also received national support, resulting in the formation of the Colorado National Collaborative, which plans to test out a multi-pronged approach in select counties that could serve as a model for other states. “This comprehensive community strategy has to involve everyone: the mental health providers, the local public health department, hospitals, schools, the local faith community, veteran-serving organizations, you name it,” said Office of Suicide Prevention Director Sarah Brummet.
