New research suggests eczema may be associated with suicide risk. Researchers analyzed 15 studies from around the world comparing people with and without eczema—a chronic, inflammatory skin condition also known as atopic dermatitis. They found that people with eczema were 44 percent more likely to have suicidal thoughts and 36 percent more likely to attempt suicide than those without it. Although the exact relationship between eczema and suicide is unclear, experts agree that it is important to be aware of the connection. Since eczema can cause physical discomfort and psychological distress, people with the skin condition may need extra support, said Joel M. Gelfand, medical director of the Dermatology Clinical Studies Unit at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine.
