Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders

Asian Americans include people originating from China, India, the Philippines, Vietnam, and other countries in Asia. Pacific Islanders are a much smaller group consisting primarily of individuals originating from Hawaii, Guam, and Samoa.

Suicide rates, risk and protective factors, and the suicide prevention strategies that are most appropriate may vary across groups. Suicide prevention programs should be based on an understanding of the suicide problem among each group of interest and use a culturally competent approach that considers cultural factors such as the role of the family, level of acculturation, language preferences, and religious beliefs.
